The Northern Territory Government is upgrading the lock at the Frances Bay Mooring Basin to extend the life of the lock.

The $20 million upgrade will:

  • deliver new lock doors
  • modernise the mechanical and electrical systems
  • extend the life of the asset to ensure the long term sustainability, efficiency and safety of the facility and the industries that use the facility.

The project will provide a more functional lock to service the Top End maritime industry, including seafood, pearling and charter vessels.

Work on site is being staged to manage impacts on basin and lock users and the project is being delivered in consultation with the Northern Territory seafood and maritime industries.

The Darwin Harbour Infrastructure Project team is working with the contractor and stakeholders to minimise the impacts on the users of the lock, mooring basin and Fisherman’s Wharf as construction works continue, including managing the number and length of time for lock closures.

Additional temporary barge facilities are available at Fisherman’s Wharf during lock closures and the wharf will be closed to the public during these lock closure periods.
